Hitchhiker's Guide; A Review
30 April 2005

For those of you who have seen The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy already, you will agree with me in saying that this movie is not for the unitiated. I saw it yesterday and I loved it, of course, I've read all the books and love the series. Unfortunately, for those who aren't familiar with Douglas Adams' work or didn't like it to begin with, you probably either won't understand or won't like this movie. Of coure, if you don't mind not understanding the whole plot or some of the references, you can still enjoy the film. And here's why...

Besides, of course, the brilliant casting of Mr. Rickman as Marvin's voice, you have Sam Rockwell, of Galaxy Quest, as the galaxy's president Zaphod Beeblebrox. If you like making fun of George W. Bush, you will like this character. His slight twangy accent and stupidity will almost immediately draw up the face of the Commander-in-Chief. Throw in a pinch of surfer dude lingo on top of that and you've got Zaphod's character. Martin Freeman (Love Actually) is about as close to the character of Arthur Dent in the book, in my opinion, as you can get. His everyman persona is perfect for the bewildered and ever-so-angry Dent. And last, but not least, Mos Def's (Something the Lord Made) turn as Ford Prefect should put to rest any fears fans might have had prior to the release. While he doesn't physcially resemble the character Adams penned nearly 30 years ago, his personality and movement are exactly what I had in mind when reading the book.

All in all, I think this film has done the book reasonable justice. We must bear in mind, of course, that Adams never wrote the story the same twice and so this screenplay is merely another adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. My advice? Go see it and figure it out for yourself.
